Every roll label has two important characteristics:
- The winding style
- The leading edge
Together, these determine exactly how the labels unwind during application.
Choosing the correct unwind direction ensures smooth production and prevents unnecessary machine stoppages.
Outer Winding vs. Inner Winding
The first thing to determine is whether you need Outer Winding or Inner Winding.
Outer Winding
With Outer Winding, the printed labels face outward and are visible on the outside of the roll.
This is the most common winding style for many labeling applications.
Inner Winding
With Inner Winding, the printed labels face inward, while the liner is visible on the outside of the roll.
Some labeling systems require this configuration depending on how the roll is mounted inside the applicator.
Understanding the Leading Edge
The second part of the unwind direction is the leading edge.
This simply refers to which side of the label comes off the roll first.
Depending on your labeling equipment, one of the following orientations may be required:
- Top Edge Leading
